Pittosporum is a family of smooth leafed trees and shrubs. There are many cultivars, but wild Pittosporum tenuifolium can grow up to about 10 metres tall.

Widely used throughout New Zealand for hedging, they are a resilient species that succeeds in depleted soil and harsh weather conditions. In general, planting them in wet areas with poor drainage can cause leaf drop and suboptimal results.

Pittosporum tenuifolium produces pretty little dark purple flowers with nectar, attracting many birds and insects, and helping with pollination. National databases record dozens of insect families that either house or feed on pittosporum. This is a huge advantage in revegetation for native biodiversity.
